How to Search Ingham County Court Records

The main search tool for Ingham County is the Ingham County Circuit and Probate Court Record Search. The portal title reads "Ingham County, Michigan - Court Record Search." It pulls Ingham County case data from the 30th Judicial Circuit Court and the Ingham County Probate Court. Coverage of Ingham court files goes back to 1986 for most Circuit and Probate cases. Criminal case coverage in Ingham starts in 2000. The Ingham search tool runs only one court at a time. Personal protection order files in Ingham are not on the portal due to MCR 3.705. Victim data is held back from the public view. Online matches are leads, not the official Ingham court record. To see the certified file, a person must go to the Ingham County Clerk of the Circuit Court or the Probate Register's Office.

A few things help before any Ingham County court records search. Have the full legal name or business name. Have a date of birth ready for any criminal or traffic file. Have the case number if it is on a notice, ticket, or order. Pick the right Ingham court for the case type. Most adult criminal and felony files sit in the Ingham County Circuit Court. Estates, wills, trusts, and guardianships sit in Ingham County Probate Court. District Court traffic and misdemeanor files are handled by the 55th Judicial District Court in Ingham County and are not on this portal.

  1. Open the Ingham County Court Record Search page and pick one court. Choose Circuit or Probate. The tool can search only one Ingham court at a time.
  2. For a person, enter at least two letters of the last name and at least one initial of the first name. The last-name field on the Ingham portal allows wildcards. For example, "SM" returns Smith, Smithton, and Smith Auto Parts. For a business party, use the business name field and leave the punctuation out.
  3. Enter a date of birth for any Ingham criminal or traffic search. The portal requires DOB for those case types. Use the month, day, and year drop-downs.
  4. Check party type. Pick Plaintiff or Petitioner, Defendant or Respondent, or both. Use both if the role is not clear.
  5. Pick case type for Ingham Circuit Court runs. Choose Civil or Family, Criminal, or other choices the form shows. Probate searches skip party type and case type.
  6. Set a year range to narrow large name lists. Submit the form with the Search button. Use Clear to reset the form.
  7. For a known Ingham case number, use the search by case number tab. Type the exact case number and pick the right court.

Hearing dates and court calendars are on a sister tool. The Ingham County Court Hearing Schedule and the Daily Court Schedule show what is on the Ingham docket for a given day. These are good for upcoming hearings. They are not the full Ingham case file.

Public Access Framework for Ingham County Court Records

Michigan splits access between court files and county papers. Ingham court case files follow the Michigan Court Rules, with MCR 8.119 as the core rule on court record access, custody, and limits. Ingham County administrative papers like sheriff policies and board minutes follow the state Freedom of Information Act. The two Ingham paths use different forms, fees, and deadlines.

The state FOIA lives at MCL 15.231. The law states that all people are due full and complete information about government affairs and official acts, with set exemptions. The right to look at or copy an Ingham public record sits at MCL 15.233. The fee rules sit at MCL 15.234. Response and denial steps sit at MCL 15.235. A denial can be sent up to the head of the Ingham public body or taken to circuit court. None of the FOIA steps replace the court rule path for Ingham case files.

Statute callout: Court case files are governed by MCR 8.119 for general access, by MCL 15.233 of the Michigan FOIA for non-case county records, and by MCR 3.705 for the rule that keeps personal protection order case data off the online portal.

Ingham court copy and certified copy fees are set by court statute, court rule, SCAO guidance, and local fee orders. They are not the same as FOIA fees. An Ingham clerk can charge for paper copies, certified copies, and time spent on a deep record search. A FOIA request for Ingham County papers may include labor, copy, and mail costs, with a possible fee waiver for cases of public interest. Ask the Ingham clerk's office or the Ingham FOIA coordinator for the right form and fee before paying.

Note: Ingham court record fees and FOIA fees follow different rules, so check with the right office before sending a payment or request.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Ingham County

Some Ingham County court records are not open to the public. The Ingham Court Record Search portal lists a few of these limits on its home screen. Personal protection order case data in Ingham is held back under MCR 3.705. Victim data is held back. Ingham adoption files are not open. Juvenile files are mostly closed. Mental health files are closed under the Michigan Mental Health Code. An Ingham court order may seal any case under MCR 8.119 and case law.

The set-aside law lets a person ask the Ingham court to remove a qualifying conviction from public view. The main statute is MCL 780.621. The effect of a set-aside order sits at MCL 780.623. After a set-aside, the case is not on the public Ingham court file or the state criminal record check. Police, courts, prosecutors, and some licensing groups may still see the Ingham file for set legal purposes. A set-aside is not a full erase.

Juvenile Ingham court files are held back under MCL 712A.28. Some parties, agencies, lawyers, and people with a court order may still see them. Ingham adoption files sit under MCL 710.67, which makes them confidential unless a statute or court order allows access. Mental health record limits sit at MCL 330.1748. Grand jury work, sealed warrants, and protected attorney work are not public until a court order releases them.

To ask to see a sealed Ingham file, a person normally files a motion in the same court that ordered the seal. The motion must give a legal reason that fits the rule or statute. The Ingham court may set a hearing. The court may grant full access, partial access, or no access. For a set-aside ask, the person files in the convicting Ingham court, serves the prosecutor and the Michigan State Police, and may need to attend a hearing. Some set-aside relief is now automatic for certain low-level cases under the Clean Slate law.

In-Person Court Record Requests

Some Ingham files are not online. Some files need a certified copy for use in another court, a job check, or a state office. The Ingham clerk's counter is the way to get those. The Ingham County Clerk of the Circuit Court keeps the official Circuit Court file. The Ingham Probate Register's Office keeps the official Probate file. The 55th District Court keeps its own Ingham files in Mason. Each Ingham office charges its own copy and certify fee, set by court rule and local order.
