Search Ingham County Inmates

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office runs the local jail and posts a public inmate locator that lets the public search for Ingham County inmates by name or by inmate number. The roster is the first place to check if a friend or family member has just been booked into the Ingham County jail. It also points to the vendors used for digital mail, money deposits, video visits, phone calls, and e-messages. A booking shows up on the local jail roster well before a case file appears on the court record search. The Ingham County inmate roster does not show people held in state prison or federal custody.

Ingham County Inmate Locator Search Fields

The Ingham County jail roster takes a short list of inputs, but the field that matters most depends on which tab is active. The Name tab works best for the general public looking up a friend or family member. The Inmate Number tab is faster for an attorney, bondsman, or family member who already has the booking number from a prior contact. A full inventory of the visible fields is shown below.

The county screenshot of the Inmate Locator confirms each field on the live form. A look at the live tool from the Ingham County Sheriff's Office shows the layout used today.

What an Ingham County Inmate Profile Shows

Once a result is clicked, the Ingham County jail roster opens a profile view for that inmate. The profile pulls together the data the jail collects at booking and the data it tracks during custody. Bond amount and bond type drive whether release is possible without a court order. The charge list ties the jail record back to the case in District Court or Circuit Court. The expected field inventory for an Ingham County inmate profile is shown below.

FieldWhat It Shows

Inmate numberThe booking number used in mail, deposits, and locator searches.

The Ingham County Booking Process

Booking is the steps that turn an arrest into a jail record. After arrest, the person is taken to the Ingham County jail intake area. Staff search the person, log property, and run a medical screen. Officers take a photo and fingerprints, run the prints through state and federal systems, and check for prior holds. The booking system creates a new record with the inmate number that the jail roster will display.

Classification follows intake. The jail sorts inmates by sex, age, charge type, prior history, and any medical or mental health needs. Housing assignment is based on that classification. The inmate is given access to the jail phone system under facility rules, which is how most first calls home get made.

From booking, the case moves to court. Felony cases usually start in the 55th District Court for arraignment and a probable cause conference, and may be bound over to the 30th Circuit Court for trial. Misdemeanor and traffic-criminal matters most often stay in District Court. Bond is set at the first hearing or at a separate bond review, and the bond amount is reflected on the Ingham County inmate profile once it is updated. The court date on the profile points to the next scheduled hearing.

Bond, Custody Status, and Court Dates

The bond field is one of the most useful items on the Ingham County jail roster. Bond can be cash, surety through a bondsman, a 10 percent deposit, or a personal recognizance release with no money down. Some inmates show no bond, which means a judge has ordered a hold without bond, often for a serious felony or a parole violation. The bond status shown on the profile is whether bond has been posted, not whether the case is closed.

Custody status is the other key field. An Ingham County inmate can be in general population, in a medical unit, in segregation, or on a hold for another agency. A person can show "released" on the locator and still be in custody somewhere else if a state, federal, or out-of-county hold has been lodged. Always confirm release in person or by phone before assuming the person is free to go.

Court dates on the roster are pulled from the court's calendar system. The same hearing can be confirmed through the public schedule at courts.ingham.org/CourtHearingSchedule. If the hearing has been moved or the case has been resolved, the Ingham County court record search at courts.ingham.org/CourtRecordSearch will show the case-level update. The jail roster, court schedule, and case search work together as three views of the same case.

Sending Mail to an Ingham County Inmate

Mail to an Ingham County inmate does not go to the jail. On April 1, 2023, the Ingham County jail moved to a digital mail system. Every letter and card is sent to a mail processing center, scanned, and then delivered to the inmate in digital form. The county page connects the change to reduced recidivism and improved behavioral health and notes that family and friends can again send full letters and greeting cards rather than the metered postcards used during the contraband-control period.

The county page says the digital mail service does not cost the sender anything beyond regular postage. Senders pay for a stamp; the scanning and delivery cost is covered. Use the exact address below or the mail will be returned. The inmate number must appear with the name or the processing center cannot route the scan.

Use this address for general inmate mail:

Inmate Name -- Inmate Number
C/O Mail Processing Center
P.O. Box 9175
Seminole, FL 33775-9175

Note: This Florida P.O. Box is the mail processing center only, not the physical Ingham County jail address. Do not send urgent legal paperwork to this address. Attorney mail and legal mail rules should be confirmed with the Sheriff's Office before sending.

Depositing Money on an Inmate's Account

The Ingham County jail uses eXpressAccount for inmate fund deposits. The county inmate locator page links straight to the vendor and gives a short set of steps for sending money. Funds on an inmate account are used for commissary, phone time, and e-messages through SmartJailMail. Family members are the most common depositors, but anyone with the inmate's name and inmate number can send money through the vendor.

A look at the deposit vendor used by the Ingham County jail shows the basic flow. The page explains how to set up an account and how to pick the correct facility.

Pick Ingham County jail as the facility, type the inmate name and inmate number, and complete the payment. Vendor fees may apply on top of the deposit amount. Confirm the fee on the vendor page before clicking submit.

Video Visits, Phone Calls, and Messages

SmartJailMail is the vendor for video visits, phone services, and e-messages at the Ingham County jail. The county locator page links to smartjailmail.com and lists a support number for help with account setup, scheduling, and billing. Video visits are scheduled in advance and run inside time windows set by the facility. Phone calls use a prepaid account that the inmate or a family member funds. E-messages are short text-style messages that the inmate can read and reply to from a jail kiosk.

Verifying Release and What Comes Next

When a name drops off the Ingham County jail roster, the inmate may have been released, transferred, or moved to a state or federal facility. The locator does not keep a separate "recently released" list on its home page. The first step is to confirm release in person or by phone with the Sheriff's Office. State prisoners can be checked through the Michigan Department of Corrections offender search, and federal prisoners through the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.

For deeper release lookups, see the released inmates page on this site. That page covers VINELink notifications, the Michigan DOC OTIS search, the federal BOP locator, and the Michigan Sex Offender Registry. It also explains why someone might be locally releasable but still held on another agency's hold.

Inmate Records vs Criminal Court Records

An Ingham County inmate record is a jail record. It shows who is in custody, why they were booked, what their bond is, and when their next hearing is. A criminal court record is a case record. It shows charges as filed, motions, hearings, plea, verdict, sentence, and post-judgment activity. The two records are tied by the case number and the inmate's name, but they live in different systems.

For court-level case detail, use the court records portal or the arrest records page. The court record will outlast the jail record. The jail record clears when the inmate is released; the court record stays on file with the Clerk of the Circuit Court or the 55th District Court for the life of the case.
